What is a "large" coin collection

Was going to do a poll, but not sure the best wording/voting options.

What would you consider to be a large coin collection. If someone says "Well i have about 30K invested in coins" would you think, "Wow that is a ton of loot"

At what $ figure do you say wow that is a sizable collection.

The coins I am interested in can easily get one over $100K before they realize it. But I seem to get more and more desensitized to these larger figures the more I collect.

I suppose to the average joe a $5K collection would seem pretty wild- let alone a $5K coin!

A 5k coin is like a game of musical chairs.

You don't want to be the one left holding it if coins return to bullion value.

All numismatics depend on the "Greater Fool Theory"......in theory, there is a greater fool than me out there.

I am with you on that Andy......

The largest colection of coins in the world used to belong to King Faruk and every day he use to go to his coin room and play with them by making them "shinny"....... they lost 30-40% of its value.

I would say that LARGE would have to to start at least at 10 million bucks.

By the way, a collection to me means different types of coins and not just one coin worth 10 million bucks.

A large collection is that when the wife finds out about she says:

WTF OMG! Are you F'ing Nuts!

Remember...what they don't know, they can't tell anyone about.

I think I got that within the first month of having been bit by the bullion bug. But, after introducing the start of the trove and noting its existence, just so she can pick up the trial if I croak, it's going to be on a "NTK" basis. :rose:

I have a 8 cubic foot contractors type wheelbarrow, when I get that filled with 90% pre-circulated silver...I will have a large coin collection:birthday:

On a certain level I can understand the greater fool theory. On the other hand, history has shown that antiques and collectibles always have a place in modern society. Just another way to hedge AND have fun.

I think 10 Million is high. I think 250-400K in 99% of people's mind would be considered a "large" collection.

(large= insane=stupid=immoral=etc to many people)

Love Monster? I then must be part of the 1% because to me for a collector to say that he has a $400-500 collection is only pennies..... unless you are talking about a kids collention in which case he is doing good.

$10M in coin collections? You surely are rich. If what Jason Hummel says $8000/ounce silver becomes reality you will have 8 billion dollars.

I wonder how many AK-47s do you need to have to guard your hoard against possible loot? Probably you need to have a whole army? I would rather diversify a bit and not put all eggs in one busket.

I agree, I'd go with 2 snipers with 50cal BMGs with gen 4 night vision optics, 2 with .308s and one with a shotgun for close range

Oh I dunno, would a few of those 1 kilo silver Australian coins qualify as a large coin, collection?

Good point! If I only buy gold sovereigns I guess I can tell my family I only have a 'small coin' collection!

I keep telling you people that I am not "rich" in the true sense of the word, but in order to know how the big boys think you must do the same.

If you think small you will stay small, money is not what you have but how you feel with what you have......and that's what trully makes you either rich or poor.

Re: What is a "large" coin collection

Based on some comments made above, we don't even have a collection at all.

Ponce Cuba 09-30-2006 12:01 PM

Re: What is a "large" coin collection

Yes we do, but....... different sizes of "large" collection.......the poor guy may have a "large" collection and the rich guy may have a "large" collection............... the first one consist of $20.000 and the second one of $10'000,000......... is only a matter of perspective

Then, as I said, C and I don't have a collection at all... and it will take massive amounts of purchases to make me think any differently:haha:

You got that right! ;) I heard once about a doctor who had a bunch of Krugeraands in a safe deposit box at some little bank somewhere. His wife divorced him and went after everything he had, and pretty much got it (her lawyer was a shark). But she never found those gold coins. He'd sell one every once in a while to help his daughter out, and it drove the ex-wife nuts because she wanted to know where he got his money from, but she never found it! :applause_

I know Chud and that's why I wrote a while back that everyone should have a nest egg that no one knows about (only you) and that way you should be safe no matter what.............. why hell, even I have a nest egg for my nest egg..........if anyone comes after me how much do you think that they will find? :albertein

A perfect example of the point I was trying to make! Buy with cash only and keep your assets hidden. WHat t hey don't know about, or can't find - they can't go after...be it a greedy divorce lawyer, or a greedy tyrant.

question about foreign coins

i have a baggie filled with foreign coins....mostly older (mid 20th century) coins and i dont know much about them....i know none of them are gold and i was wondering if anyone knew of a website/store where i can send them the whole bag and they will give me an honest buy-price. i dont really like not knowing about these things and feel like a local shop would just say they are junk and give me $4 for the bag and then turnaround and make tons of loot...but i just dont know.
